Annual Dissertation Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the 37th annual dissertation award given by the Society of Experimental Social Psychology. The deadline for submitting nominations is April 15, 2008.

The award carries with it membership in the Society, as well as an honorarium to cover airfare, hotel, and registration at the Society's next meeting. The recipient of the award will be asked to give a brief talk based on her or his dissertation at this meeting. For a list of previous winners, see Dissertation Award Recipients.

This year the Dissertation Award Committee is chaired by Joanne Wood and includes Jerry Suls and John Bargh. Here are the procedures for submitting nominations and selecting the award recipient:

  1. Anyone (whether or not a member of SESP) may nominate any number of dissertations for the award. Only dissertations completed during the period January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2007, are eligible for this year's award. The completion date for a dissertation is defined as the date of the oral defense, as officially recorded by the nominee's institution.

  2. In contrast to previous years in which paper copies of the abstract were sent to the committee chair, nominees should send a Word or PDF file that includes a summary of the dissertation to the Chair of the Award Committee, Joanne Wood (jwood@watarts.uwaterloo.ca). On the subject line of the email, please include the nominee's name and the following: "SESP Dissertation Award nomination." Please do not send the dissertation at this time. The summary should be an expanded version of the dissertation abstract. It should include an accurate description of major procedures and findings, as well as a statement of the significance of the research. The summary should be presented in 12-point Times New Roman font and should be 3 to 5 pages (double-spaced) in length. Summaries that use smaller font or that exceed the 5-page limit will not be considered. Nominees should include an address and telephone number where they can be reached during May and June.

  3. The summaries should not include any information identifying the author, institution, advisor, or dissertation committee members. This information should be included only in the cover letter. The cover letter should be in a separate file.

  4. Based on the summaries, the Award Committee will select 3 finalists. Each finalist will then be asked to send a file with the full dissertation to Joanne Wood, who will forward the full dissertation to committee members.

  5. Once the Committee has selected the Award recipient, all nominees will be informed of the outcome. The names of finalists and the Award recipient will be announced to the membership at the 2008 meeting.

  6. Additional inquiries may be sent via e-mail to Joanne Wood at jwood@watarts.uwaterloo.ca.
